Ask a Dentist: How Can I Help Prevent Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a serious oral condition that affects almost half of all Americans and results from poor oral hygiene in most cases. It is caused by untreated dental plaque build-up on your teeth and gums.

The plaque and tartar need to be removed regularly. If left untreated, the plaque and tartar will build up over time and inflame and irritate your gums. It can be treated by your dentist if caught early enough. They may prescribe medicated toothpaste and mouthwash to help to reverse the damage.

This disease can lead to many health issues long-term if not removed. The build-up can cause tooth decay and cavities, which lead to tooth loss, among other illnesses. No one wants to deal with dental problems; we all have a slight fear of the dentist. However, if you follow simple guidelines, you can keep your mouth happy and healthy.

How to prevent gum disease

All dentists want to do whatever they can to keep their patients from getting gum disease. They want to help all patients reverse and prevent the effects:

  • Establish an excellent oral hygiene routine. Make sure to get in the habit of brushing your teeth at least twice a day and always floss between meals and bedtime. Use a mouthwash with effective ingredients. These few minutes every day will pay off immensely in the future.
  • Eat a balanced diet. You want to eat foods that are good for you. Avoid sugary foods and drinks that will stick to your teeth long after you are finished with them and cause cavities. Incorporate foods high in vitamins and rich in protein. Any food that will boost your immune system is also a great way to help prevent many other diseases. A healthy diet is always a great idea.
  • Avoid tobacco products. Tobacco use is horrible for your oral hygiene. They have been known to cause as well, among other diseases. It is not healthy at all. If you have trouble quitting tobacco, ask your dentist for some advice and help in the right direction.
  • Visit the dentist regularly. It would be best if you always went for your six-month checkups at the dentist. They can discover dental issues and, if treated properly, will prevent this disease. Your dentist is your best aid in keeping up your oral health.

This type of dental problem is the leading cause of tooth loss and can spread to other oral issues down the road. You want to be sure to talk to your dentist about all of the ways you can benefit from a proper oral hygiene routine.

You want to be very proactive when it comes to your oral health. Gum disease is a fast-growing dental issue that will harm your teeth by causing decay and tooth loss. Always trust your dentist’s recommendations.

They know your oral health best and will be able to guide you through the most effective treatments.
