A holistic dentist treats oral health concerns the same as a general dentist would, although the treatment options are more natural, and only non-toxic materials are typically used. The primary benefit of a holistic dentist is that they attend to whole health with a focus on oral care, rather than only dealing with oral health concerns.
Holistic dentistry services
Every holistic dentist offers their own set of procedures, and these may look different for each holistic dentist. However, several of the more common types of holistic dentistry services are whole health evaluations, dental evaluations, composite fillings, educational services, TMJ treatment, and various non-dental related services.
Whole health evaluations
Many holistic dentists conduct a health and wellness assessment to determine if there are any mental or physical health concerns that the patient can benefit from addressing. For example, a holistic dentist may structure a plan for a patient to deal with diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol, which could also help improve oral health by reducing the risk of periodontal disease and other concerns. Of course, every treatment and prevention plan is fully personalized for each patient.
Dental evaluations
Much like a traditional dental practice, holistic dentists also offer dental evaluations. This involves a thorough and extensive oral examination to detect any oral health concerns such as cavities, damaged teeth, periodontal disease, and more. Based on the information, they can put together a treatment and prevention plan to deal with oral health concerns. However, this is typically a part of the larger treatment plan that focuses on whole health.
Composite fillings
Holistic dentists often use composite fillings instead of amalgam fillings because they are less toxic. Amalgam fillings contain mercury, which may not be the best for whole health. Composite fillings offer many of the same cosmetic and oral health advantages as amalgam but are generally considered a safer filling material option.
Educational services
Holistic dentists offer restorative care and can address oral health issues when necessary. However, the long-term goal is to help patients prevent oral health (as well as general health) concerns through a prevention plan. Subsequently, they typically seek to educate patients on how diet can affect whole health and oral health and how to practice good oral hygiene through brushing and flossing regularly.
Non-dental services
Non-dental services are what really set holistic dentists apart from other types of dental professionals. Holistic dentists may offer acupuncture, massage therapy, nutritional advice, herbology, homeopathy, and spiritual healing, among other possible services. This allows patients to address their entire health with the understanding that certain general health decisions can have an impact on their oral health as well.
